Former SNL Writer Joe Bodolai Dead of Apparent Suicide

Joe Bodolai Former Saturday Night Live writer Joe Bodolai has died from an apparent suicide, the Los Angeles Times reports. He was 63.Bodolai's body was found Monday afternoon in a Los Angeles hotel room with a bottle of Gatorade and a bottle of antifreeze, the coroner's office's chief Craig Harvey said. There was no indication of foul play.See the celebs we lost this yearThere was no suicide note in the room, but Bodolai posted a lengthy entry on his blog Friday titled "If This Were Your Last Day on Earth, What Would You Do?" Under "Things I Regret," Bodolai listed his "inability to conquer my alcoholism," that he is "no longer able to withstand any more of life's pain" and "the pain I have caused and am now causing my sons and the love of my life, my ex-wife Bianca."Bodolai listed the most items under "Things I Am Proud Of," which includes his sons, his marriage to Bianca, his work with SNL and as a producer on the Canadian sketch comedy show Kids in the Hall."I don't need replies or comments or anything. I need to feel the good that I did and whatever good I have ever done for you is enough for me," he wrote. "May you all have the happy lives you deserve. Olivia Thirlby on Her Role in 'Dredd' and Fighting Aliens in 'The Darkest Hour'

You may not know Olivia Thirlby by name, but odds are you recognize the 25-year-old actress, who's starred in everything from 'Juno' to 'No Strings Attached' to 'United 93.' Judging from her upcoming slate of films, name recognition could soon follow as well. In addition to appearing alongside Paul Dano and Robert De Niro in next year's 'Being Flynn,' Thirlby is set to play Judge Anderson in the buzzed-about sci-flick, 'Dredd.' The film, based on the comic book series, was originally adapted into the famously awful 1995 movie 'Judge Dredd' with Sylvester Stallone (not that it matters -- Thirlby hasn't even watched that one); fans of the comic have been clamoring for another version ever since. Moviefone recently spoke with Thirlby about stepping into the role of Anderson, whether she was a sci-fi geek growing up and what it's like fighting aliens, which she does in her upcoming film, 'The Darkest Hour,' in theaters Christmas Day. So things get pretty physical with your character in 'The Darkest Hour.' I heard you did all your own stunts. I did. I got banged up with a lot of gnarly bruises, but it was fun. It was interesting. It took a lot of endurance. I've always been curious if doing your own stunts is actually fun. It's a kind of a matter of necessity, like some things they can't use a double for because they need to be able to see my face. It's also a matter of what kinds of stunts there are, like there's certain stunts that I wouldn't have been capable of doing, but all of our stuff for 'Darkest Hour' was me on the rig hooked up to wires. It was mostly just falling and being dragged. All the aliens in this film are computer generated. Is it tough to elicit that type of emotion when what you're supposed to be freaked out about isn't even in front of you in the first place? It is difficult to shoot in that respect, because a lot of the time the things that you're supposed to be reacting to don't exist yet, so it can be a challenge in that regard, because you do really have to use your imagination to convincingly seem like you're terrified of something, which at the time the camera is rolling, it is completely not there. When we were filming 'The Darkest Hour,' we didn't even know what the aliens were going to look like, we didn't even have a graphic reference. So it was defnitely a big challenge to sell those kind of extreme moments when you're just generating them from your own imagination. So you've got 'The Darkest Hour' and the 'Dredd' coming out. Were you a big sci-fi geek growing up? To be honest, I wasn't a sci-fi geek at all. But I do love a good sci-fi film, especially one that can really take you away. And I read some reality-bending novels growing up, like stuff by [Kurt] Vonngeut, so I already had one part my brain open to the unnatural and unusual, and it's generally fun to venture into that world and film in it. Did you even bother watching the original 'Judge Dredd' movie with Sylvester Stallone, or did you want to go in with a clean slate? I actually didn't watch the original one intentionally, and I still haven't. But I think that at this point, it's not an intentional choice. I am excited to see [the original], and whenever I have the chance [I will]. But during shooting, I decided not to watch it, just because the film we were making really has nothing to do with it, and I didn't want to get influenced by it at all. With 'Dredd' -- and to a certain extent, 'Being Flynn,' based on 'Another Bullshit Night in Suck City' by Nick Flynn -- do you feel more pressure because both of them have an established fan base? Yeah, definitely. Of course, the Nick Flynn fan base is very different from the '2000 AD' fan base [laughs]. It's a little daunting [for 'Dredd'], where I am personifying a character which already exists very firmly in people's minds, and that people have an attachment to and have an affection for. But my hope is that people respond to it and they feel that it's something that complements their imaginations and the ideas that they already had built up, instead of conflicting with them. All I can do is hope and pray that I won't be disappointing anyone. The character that I play in 'Being Flynn' doesn't really exist in his memoirs, she's kind of an amalgam of people. So luckily I am not living up to real people there. If you look at the trajectory of your career, you've continued to get bigger roles in bigger films. From your perspective, do you feel like you are starting to move into a different tier of acting and/or celebrity at this point? It's all relative. I still audition a lot and work really hard to get work. So I don't really walk around feeling like I've made it [laughs]. My short term goals are really just to be creatively stimulated and to be excited about material I might be working on. I am less concerned with maybe how each project fits into the big picture of my career, as long as, on an individual basis, it's compelling and fun. Rapper Baba Brinkman Gets Positively Medieval

NY (AP) Most rappers boast about their intellect, but few go out and actually get a master's degree in medieval and Renaissance literature so they can spit better rhymes.Then again, most rappers aren't Baba Brinkman.The 33-year-old Canadian, who when talking is just as likely to quote from Ice-T as make a reference to evolutionary psychology, has put his life at the service of hip-hop, a form of music he sees as limitless in its power.To prove it, he's rapped a version of Geoffrey Chaucer's 14th-century "The Canterbury Tales." He has also waded into science, tackling Charles Darwin's "The Origin of the Species," and has rapped about market economics."Every message is conducive to this medium," he says. "People would say, 'Well, maybe in theory. But what have you got?' That's where the 'Canterbury Tales' idea came about: If I can rap medieval poetry, then that will show people the boundarylessness of the genre."Brinkman, along with his frequent DJ collaborator Jamie Simmonds, is currently revisiting Chaucer with their "The Canterbury Tales Remixed" at the SoHo Playhouse following a successful run there of "The Rap Guide to Evolution" this fall.The show sandwiches three of the Canterbury Tales between the epic poems of Gilgamesh and Beowulf, turning these dusty old works that torture adolescents in classrooms into remarkably current and vivid stories."This is bigger than me; it's bigger than you, bigger than rap," Brinkman says at the top of the show. "It's bigger than fingers on triggers and bigger than gangsters slingin' the crack/That's just the latest version of an ancient story/The rage of warriors hungry for fame and glory."During performances, Brinkman prowls the stage in a pair of jeans and a hoodie, and often interacts with Simmonds, who scratches out beats on his turntables and is prone to layer Mobb Deep cuts over strings.The two met in 2008 in the southeast English city of Brighton and instantly bonded over their love of hip-hop. Simmonds, a 36-year-old Englishman, came from a recording studio background and was more used to spinning records to tipsy dancers in nightclubs than providing the music for a rap about behavior patterns of primate species."We just really connected. I really liked that it was something so different. It kind of opened a whole new world for me as well. The theater world was something I'd never been a part of," Simmonds says. "I really enjoy a challenge. And that's exactly what it was. At Simon Fraser University, his master's thesis drew parallels between the worlds of hip-hop music and literary poetry.After graduating, Brinkman, who was born Dirk Brinkman, has taken his award-winning hip-hop theater shows to dozens of cities around the world, including several stops at the Edinburgh Fringe in Scotland. One show often leads to a commission for another from audience members stunned that Brinkman's raps can tackle any complex idea."Everything we do is a tribute to hip-hop. I think I'm pretty rare in that I actually got an English master's degree because I wanted to be a more versatile MC," he says."I wanted to explain to people that rap is not 40 years old. I mean, hip-hop as a culture is 40 years old and the thing we call rap today is 40 years old, but rhymed storytelling is ancient. Every culture's got some variation."In many ways, his remixed Chaucer is a return to his roots. After getting his master's, Brinkman toured with a version of "The Canterbury Tales," which by then included The Miller's Tale and The Wife of Bath's Tale. For the new show, he's rewritten everything and collaborated with Simmonds on original music.Deciding to rap about "The Canterbury Tales" makes a perverse sense. Brinkman explains that Chaucer wrote a rich and elaborate tapestry of medieval social life, combining snapshots of all classes, from nobles to workers, from priests and nuns to drunkards and thieves.There was another reason, too: "He's dirty," says Brinkman, laughing."He's the Slick Rick of that era," Simmonds adds."'The Canterbury Tales' are so unashamed and a totally piercing portrait of human nature and human foibles. And I think rap is that as well. It doesn't blush when it looks at human behavior," Brinkman says. "It's all on display in rap warts and all. And that's what 'The Canterbury Tales' is, too."In the show, Brinkman's lyrics performed over Simmonds' moody, orchestral score explain the work through a cheeky modern lens. In the Pardoner's Tale, Brinkman raps that the title character is "a medieval televangelist. He's Creflo Dollar, he's Ted Haggard, he's got mad swagger like Jimmy Swaggart."In the same tale, Brinkman offers a way to understand the three drunken men who seek to kill Death: "Think Boyz in the Hood; think Menace to Society/Just from the Middle Ages, of the Flemish variety."His work on Chaucer led to "The Rap Guide to Evolution," ''The Rap Guide to Human Nature" and "The Rap Guide to Business," which he was commissioned to write to welcome a new class at NY University's Stern School of Business."Human capital, it's tough to quantify," he rapped in one song. "But without it your business will not survive/Human capital, it's tough to quantify/You got to offer people more than just a nine to five."Brinkman and Simmonds have both moved to NY and are preparing to take full advantage of their three-year work visas. Their evolution rap will tour in the spring and the Chaucer work is now enjoying a run until early January, and may tour as well.The two are plotting a new rap guide, perhaps on religion or maybe on climate change. Whatever it is, it won't be fluffy. "I'm not exactly drawn to small talk," says Brinkman. For the latest dose of the master’s philosophizing I present the trailer for next February’s Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds — or, as we call it around these parts, The Perry. Tyler Perry stars as well-to-do Ivy Leaguer Wesley Deeds, who is not heading to Washington but instead for a midlife-jarring reckoning with his first world problems. Deeds, you see, doesn’t appreciate the cozy life he’s sleepwalking through until the plucky young office cleaning lady/single mother (Thandie Newton) crashes into his life, all but begging to be judged. Well, does richie rich Tyler Perry know the price of a gallon of milk? (Seriously, does the real bazillionaire Tyler Perry know the price of a gallon of milk?) I think not. Faced. Life lessons are about to be learned, and how. You can’t quite tell from the trailer, but Good Deeds (get it, it’s a clever play on words!) is described as a romantic comedy and not a hard-hitting class drama, which means, unfortunately, Perry’s Deeds will probably fall for the poor-but-beautiful Newton at some point or another. Classic manic pixie cleaning lady storyline. Side note: I can’t help but suspect the timing of this trailer was meant to coincide somewhat with the latest Mission: Impossible sequel given that Newton was in M:I 2, which I just rewatched last night. Unfortunately for Perry and Co. M:I 2 is awful. All I can think of watching Newton here is the image of her about to throw herself off of a cliff to avoid unleashing a plague upon the world. Also: It’s always a bit distracting to see Perry onscreen out of Madea-wear, let alone sitting across the table nodding politely playing son to Phylicia Rashad. This is kind of how I imagine I, Alex Cross will feel, only with less murder and stuff. Verdict: Something tells me that omitting cast mate Jamie Kennedy out of the trailer is indication that we’re in for a terrible surprise. Cautiously adding to the bottom of my future Netflix queue while I pop in A Madea Christmas.

Glee's Holiday Special: Who's kissing under the mistletoe? "A Wookiee comes to him in the middle of the night and speaks to him," series star Matthew Morrison tells TVGuide.com. Morrison got to do double-duty for the special, acting in and directing the episode, "Extraordinary Merry Christmas," which he describes as "nothing like you've ever seen on Glee - or on television - before." And as previously reported, Han Solo's BFF makes an appearance - but did he take direction well? "He did! He understood me perfectly," Morrison says. "He did have to write on a chalkboard, and that was kinda hard." So Mr. Schue schooled him, right? With his super-seasoned chalkboard writing skills? "Well, he was doing his best!" Morrison laughed. "C'mon, it's hard to hold chalk with those hands." Report: Pitbull being courted by Glee The actor said he leapt at the chance to be the boss on the set, and he "hyper-prepared" for the job, storyboarding every scene and going over every last line of dialogue. "I feel like I've seen enough great directors come through Glee -- and enough not-so-great ones - that I felt like I could probably be at least average!" he joked. "By the end of the nine days, I felt like I knew what I was doing." Morrison was also happy to report that only Jane Lynch pretended to give him a hard time. His favorite moment? The final scene, which he shot outdoors. "It's everyone singing, ringing the Salvation bell. I'm just really proud of the entire episode," Morrison said, adding that the special-within-the-special was shot in black and white in partial homage to an old Judy Garland Show holiday special. "The end is very sweet and sentimental." Good, because that's what Glee does best.
